The Mill Site Redevelopment Project is a transformational opportunity that will create a community economic development stage on which living-wage jobs, technology, science, and agricultural advances can be explored, accelerated, achieved, and sustained.
The project is a multi-phased partnership between Yakima County, City of Yakima, Washington State Department of Transportation, Washington State Department of Ecology, Washington State Department of Commerce, private property owners and others. One of the foundational portions of the project includes a new arterial street connecting Terrace Heights to Yakima which will relieve existing and future traffic congestion on the Terrace Heights-Yakima Avenue corridor and I-82 Interchange. Construction of this new street requires phased construction, as illustrated in the diagram below.
Additionally, within the City of Yakima, the closure of the Boise-Cascade Mill in 2006 created over 500 unemployed persons. However, once the site is cleaned up, it creates the opportunity for redevelopment of over 200 acres of highly visible vacant land. The property owners have not submitted a plan for the privately owned land. The land is zoned for new development and utilities will be in place with the construction of the new street system.
