The proposed Jackson Street Extension project consists of the reconstruction of approximately 1,000 feet of existing roadway and construction of approximately 1,800 feet of new roadway extension. Improvements will include a 37’ three-lane section with new curb and gutter, sidewalk, streetlights, and storm drainage. The Jackson Street extension would provide improved vehicle access and a safe pedestrian route to the Toppenish High School.
The City of Toppenish hopes to close left turn movements from Fort Road to Linden Street due to safety concerns. This intersection experiences queuing issues due to traffic backing up from Fort Road and traffic backs up from the traffic signal at the highway, located approximately 100’ west of this intersection. Limiting these left turn movements will reduce access for adjacent neighborhoods. Proposed improvements would provide easier access for these neighborhoods that wouldn’t be provided the necessary access off Fort Road any longer. School traffic would be provided easier access rather than traveling on the highway or on East McDonald Road, which is 0.6 miles north of the school.
The City has received $1,688,498 of STP/HIP funds and will use $284,107 of Local funds to complete the proposed improvements. This project is scheduled to be constructed in 2025.

- Connect the High School with Yakama Tribal School and Kirkwood Elementary
- Provide +/- 6’sidewalk/s between the High School, Yakama Tribal School and Kirkwood Elementary
- Provide emergency vehicle connections as well as goods, freight and services
- Enhance and shorten school bus transportation for the High School, Kirkwood Elementary, Yakama Tribal School and the Migrant Worker Day Care Center.
