City of Sunnyside – 6th Street Improvement Project
The 6th Street Improvement project continues the City’s effort to revitalize the downtown core, enhancing economic development, and removing and replacing failing infrastructure. In 2011, a steering committee of City residents, led by City management, identified the downtown core boundary and established priorities. In 2015, the City successfully completed the first phase of the Downtown Revitalization.
The next phase, the 6th Street Improvement Project, further enhances the entry and promotes economic development in the City’s downtown. The project rebuilds 6th Street and replaces utilities from North Avenue to Decatur Avenue.
Key project elements include street trees, street lights, bicycle racks, and wider sidewalks to promote intermodal transportation. Improvements to stormwater, domestic water, and sanitary sewer utilities will replace aging infrastructure.
The project was partially funded in 2014 through the Surface Transportation Program. However, completion of the improvements has been delayed by funding constraints, and construction is set to start again in 2023.
Total constructions costs are estimated at $3.5 million. Approximately $3.0 million is provided by the Surface Transportation Program, so there is a funding need of $0.5 million, which could be provided by local funding or another funding source.
